IT Modernization and DevOps News Week in Review 1.22.20

As Python 2.0 reaches end-of-life, it’s imperative that organizations migrate to Python 3.0 in order to ensure continued security and other updates. Yet, as the sunset period for Python 2.0 has begun (2.7.18, the last major version, will be released in April 2020), a new report by ActiveState finds that 31% of respondents to their survey are without a plan for migrating. While awareness is high, planning for the forthcoming sunsetting is more varied with only 32% reporting that they are very prepared for the event.

DevOps News

  • Red Hat announced GA of Red Hat OpenShift Container Storage 4.  The release is being touted for its hybrid cloud focus, enabling operators to simultaneously choose their data service from across multiple public clouds, all while operating apps and storage from a unified Kubernetes-based control plane. Red Hat also enhanced security in the new release, extending data protection features, like encryption, anonymization, key separation, and erasure coding. 
  • In related news, Red Hat also brought to market Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4.3, the newest version of its enterprise Kubernetes platform. According to a blog announcement, this version of Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform gives operators FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standard) compliant encryption (FIPS 140-2 Level 1) and protection for secrets at rest. 
  • JFrog launched the free ConanCenter. According to the firm’s press release,  “ConanCenter will improve user experience on the existing Conan OSS platform and offer an enriched, intuitive service for developers to search and utilize shared C/C++ libraries.”  With this launch, JFrog ”wants to enable DevOps for the IoT community…” said CTO Yoav Landman. 
  • HashiCorp introduced changes to the HashiCorp Terraform Module Registry, renaming it to the Terraform Registry, where it will add Terraform Providers — in addition to Terraform Modules. The initial set of providers are now available with HashiCorp’s stated goal to make it easy for everyone in the HashiCorp community to share providers they’ve built moving forward.
  • Git 2.25 was unveiled this past week, with new features and bug fixes including a new git sparse-checkout command, partial clone support, and more.

AWS News 

  • Amazon unveiled new AWS Backup capabilities including the ability to back up entire Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) instances, the ability to copy backups to other AWS Regions, and the ability to restore a single file from your Elastic File System filesystem instead of the full filesystem. All three new features are currently available where AWS Backup is available.
  • AWS announced two new features for Amazon EFS, IAM Authorization and Access Points. The new features are said to make it easier to manage access, share data sets, and protect EFS file systems. According to a blog announcement, the two new features include IAM authentication and authorization for NFS Clients that use IAM policies to identify clients and manage client-specific permissions, and; EFS access points that enforce the use of an operating system user and group.
  • Our AWS consulting team was excited to see that AWS has introduced the ability to start and stop Amazon EC2 Spot instances, at will. EC2 Spot Instances backed by Amazon EBS can now be stopped and started by the operator (rather than merely terminated) assuming that capacity is available within your specified budget. AWS note4s that when operators stop a Spot Instance, the EBS root device and attached EBS volumes are saved and their data persists. Upon restart, the EBS root device is restored from its prior state, previously attached data volumes are reattached, and the instance retains its instance ID.
