IT Modernization and DevOps News Week in ReviewYour IT modernization news kicks off this week with VMWorld. At the show VMware previewed a variety of new technologies, the furtherment of its multi-cloud support, and launched a new solution that will help VMware Cloud Provider partners transition to multi-cloud. The new solutions are designed to help its partners deliver a VMware-based software-defined data center.

RedHat, in an ongoing attempt to move enterprises to open source virtualization, announced its solution for cloud migration. According to Joe Fernandes, vice president of cloud platforms products at Red Hat, as cited by, “as organizations move to modernize their application environments by lifting and shifting them to the cloud, they are simultaneously looking to take greater advantage of open source virtual machines and containers specifically as an alternative to VMware.”

Flux7 this past week announced its own solution, called Flux7 Renovate™, that is designed to help enterprises increase their rate of IT modernization by simplifying and accelerating the deployment of common business applications on AWS. Instead of a simple lift-and-shift migration, enterprises can use Flux7 Renovate solutions to speed the mean time to value and gain the benefits of Infrastructure-as-Code with automated deployments available for common applications like SAP Hybris, Adobe Experience Manager and SugarCRM.

DevOpsTools News
HashiCorp Vault 0.11 was released this week. A security tool for dynamic and static secret management, data encryption, identity-based access, and more, Vault now offers new features to:

  • Streamline the management of tokens for applications and users attempting to access Vault, and
  • Provide secure multi-tenancy for multiple teams and organizations using a single Vault installation.

HashiCorp Vault is a tool of choice for the DevOps team at Flux7 as it supports a key pillar of the Flux7 Enterprise DevOps Framework, the need for injectors, tools that inject environment specific information into their service templates on the fly as elements go through the CI/CD pipeline. This level of automation helps them reach their full potential and protects against fat-finger induced errors. We encourage the use among our customers of HashiCorp Vault and HashiCorp Consul for this purpose, allowing them to have their service and configuration information available for services to pull when needed.

AWS News

  • AWS announced the availability of T3 instances for Amazon EC2 this past week. Hailed by AWS as the next generation of burstable general-purpose instances for Amazon EC2, T3 instances are said to boost price performance over previous generation T2 instances by up to 30%. As DevOps consultants, we frequently work with microservices, which are the ideal type of application — those with variable CPU usage that experience occasional spikes in demand – that would benefit from the new T3 instance as it will enable applications to burst seamlessly to meet temporary traffic peaks and then scale back down to operate at typical traffic levels.
  • AWS CloudFormation now supports AWS PrivateLink. This new support enables operators to use CloudFormation APIs inside their Amazon VPC, and route data between their VPC and CloudFormation entirely within the AWS network. With AWS PrivateLink, operators can provision and use VPC endpoints to access supported services hosted in the AWS Cloud.
